City of Roswell: Black History Month

  • City of Roswell Rowell, Georgia (map)

Overall series:
In honor of Black history, we will explore a timeline of African American art. We hope to highlight a few of the many forms of visual expression created by black artists that have helped shape today’s culture. Student artists will learn some of the origins and shifts of African art, folk art, contemporary abstract art, and collaborative art. We hope to show the evolution of artistic expression and social justice themes, as well as allow artists the space to express themselves so they may contribute their voices to this ongoing story and cultural development.

Project 2:
Crafting Your Story / Folk Art: Assemblage
Artists will explore the work of Thornton Dial, a folk artist whose family worked as sharecroppers following the emancipation. We study his story to discuss the techniques and influences of folk artists as they use the cultural ideas and physical surroundings to create narratives that tell their truth. Students will make clay assemblages on panels that allow them to explore their own stories, giving an appreciation of the techniques and materials available to create symbols that carry meaning to their families and their communities.
